Honduras Projects

WaterPartners’ very first project was in Honduras, in 1990. Today, we have helped more than 40 Honduran communities build their own safe drinking water systems. We are proud to say that more than 11,000 people in rural Honduras now have adequate access to safe drinking water, thanks to the suport our donors, our Honduran partner organization, and the hard work and dedication of community members.

WaterPartners' Honduran Program focuses on the Departments of Lempira and Intibuca, in western Honduras. The once heavily forested Departments now suffer from deforestation. This has led to extreme depletion of the local water tables, forcing women and children to walk far distances to collect water for their families.

Highlighted Projects - Cholusnate and Sosoal de San Andres

In the past, the residents of Cholusnate and Sosoal spent hours collecting water every day. Now, thanks to funding from Ethos WaterTM and the Rainbow World Fund, community members have water from a clean, potable source that they collect right outside their homes.

Overall, the project took almost two years to complete. Because of the devastating deforestation in the area, education on sustainable watershed management was also crucial to the long-term success of the project. Through a school-based program, every child learned about protecting the natural resources and the environment.

The construction of the new system was a difficult task. Several miles separated the closest safe water source and the villages. Overall, bringing the pipe down from the spring to the main distribution point relied on more than 3.9 miles of pipe and thousands of man-hours, provided by the residents.

In November 2004, our partner organization officially transferred the watershed ownership to the Water Committee Boards of Cholusnate and Sosoal.
