Highlighted Urban Project - Pallabi Slum
 |
| Pallabi Slum community meeting for hygiene training with Community based health worker, Tslima. |
Pallabi Slum is an overpopulated squatter community in Dhaka. Children of Pallabi frequently suffer from diarrheal diseases. Residents retrieve water from illegal connections to the city's water supply, often paying up to 10 times the price of the water sold to legal connections.
Our project in Pallabi has been divided into three phases. Phase I and II are complete and have been tremendously successful. Each phase includes an underground water reservoir with connection to DWASA water mains. Water is pumped from the underground reservoir with hand-pumps.
Two types of latrines were constructed in the Pallabi Slum. Cluster latrines that can serve up to 250 people are being used in some areas. These latrines are served by septic tanks and have several private stalls to accommodate both adults and children. Additionally, individual latrines were built in households that wish to have a private latrine. These households were eligible for loans to purchase the materials needed to construct basic pit latrines.

Highlighted Rural Project - Dibbasthali
 |
| Maria Begum and her neighbors, including some children, are seen cleaning their homestead and bushes in Salla para of Dibbasthali village. |
Dibbasthali is a rural village of 1,300 people located in the Rajshahi District. Community members once walked about half an hour to obtain water from contaminated ponds. Before the water project, it was not uncommon to see cattle bathing while women filled their water jugs with the same water. Now villagers obtain their water from clean, reliable deep wells and hand pumps. Individual household pit latrines were also constructed. Sajenur Begum, a mother, told us that she feels like she is in heaven now that her neighborhood has a handpump.
